Thanks to @gofast79 for catching @fighter_ace06 and I flying the T6 course in Roswell NM today. The T6 course will be the short @sportclassairracing course. We also flew the Sport middle and outer course as well. It was a great chance to fly some new ground, learn some new course designs, offer advice where we could and plan for the @renoairraces to succeed at their new venue. #renoairraces #lancair #lancairlegacy

Another huge project to convert a regular Lancair

Another huge project to convert a regular Lancair Legacy into something special requires the Beluga Belly modification (named after the whale) which drastically reshapes the fuselage from the middle of the wing to nearly the horizontal stab. What made this belly mod different is this airplane has air conditioning. This required I make an inlet and outlet duct that connects the original holes in the fuselage to the new holes in the belly skin. The skin itself required some additional cloth inside to create a stiffer skin which would be much more stable. The part itself was molded off of @findlay_race_30 Lancair Legacy. Then another major round of bodywork to create a great compound curve surface. Tons of filling and sanding, what appears to be 10 photos sums up months of work. I've had quite a few questions about what's in the shop recently. I've actually been working on a project for a while, which still has a ways to go. This Lancair Legacy got the carbon fiber tail wrap (which takes the Vne to 340 KIAS) earning it the Super Legacy badge. The fuselage had to be sanded down to the carbon to ensure a good bond, then 2 layers from the cockpit to the vertical spar on the 45. While doing some maintenance on the Super Legacy last weekend, I pulled a compressor housing off of one of my @garrettmotion turbos built by @boostlab and it looks perfect! I think I have over 100 hours on these now with a few races and lots of cross country flying. Considering I don't run an air filter I'm shocked how clean everything was. Here's to the next 100 hours. Thanks @boostlab!

Icon Tools (Harbour Freight) sells this smoke mach

Icon Tools (Harbour Freight) sells this smoke machine for finding induction and exhaust leaks. Works really really well! I would have never guessed I'd have a leak at the fuel servo. Made a new gasket and it sealed it up.

Found this project in my camera roll. Had to rebuild a Piper Saratoga cowling which didn't fit it's new exhaust. Add the years of oil leaks and burned fire barrier, it needed quite the overhaul. Shown start to finish.

Race #4 and #44 in good company with @ddwhite817 and their fellow Lindy winner Aluminum Mistress. Today was prop balance (got it to 0.02 IPS!) and some new tires on my @beringeraero wheels. Tires made it 155 hours and I don't do too many long flights so I was happy with that. Brake pads are holding up great as well. Michelin Air tires haven't gotten any cheaper, Holy smokes! Hoping to get some test flights in tomorrow and some formation practice before departing sometime Tuesday for the races. #lancairlegacy #superlegacy #turbo

This time it's for the new Sport Class race in Las Cruces NM. I think 44 is in pretty good shape. Now I have 2 days to get 4 ready to go. I'm not going to be running Reno-like horsepower this year so it should be a little less stressful on me, and the crankshaft...

It was a super busy week in Las Cruces NM hanging

It was a super busy week in Las Cruces NM hanging the new LyCon TSIO-550 on Race #44. Special thanks to Tyler at Southwest Aviation for getting me a spot to work and lending his toolbox and skill to get the engine on and running. Fortunately I remembered where all the hoses go and we got it put together in just a few days. Test flight pics to follow.

I forgot to share this from last month. My friend David Adams took this screenshot while I was leading the @avcrace Which is a bit misleading as we start lined up sort of by speed, fastest to slowest. But, I didn't expect to win it. That's a lot of airplanes wide open, although I know @findlay_race_30 and I both had a lot of boost left. Something like an hour and fifteen minutes spoooled up. Nuts...

Quick little baffle modification I've been putting

Quick little baffle modification I've been putting off for a while. At race power my #1 cylinder has always been on the edge of being too hot. At Reno in 23 it was what made me stop adding boost. I made this little scoop and added a gap in the baffle at the front. Now I'm making ice cubes in cruise and it's one of the cooler cylinders at higher power. Haven't tried 'race' power yet. Both of my middle cylinders are now the warm ones, which is sort of expected. I might try some baffle tricks on those so everything is more inline with each other.

After the great success of the @avcrace and @eaa 2024 I wanted to do some post race inspections. During the race I was limiting power based on my #3 cylinder temperature. This is unusual as I hadn't ever had an imbalance like that before. It was good enough for the win but it left me wondering. Today I took apart the water injection system (ADI) and found that the #3 nozzle had come apart internally. There is a screen filter that had rattled loose and chewed up the threads (Pic 1) that hold it in place. I'm guessing that debris clogged the actual nozzle. (pic #2) The last picture shows where each cylinder has its own nozzle in the custom induction system I built. I'm glad it is an easy fix and to be honest it probably is a good thing it made me limit the boost. I had a lot of throttle left!

I've been flooded with compliments the last few days about my Grand Champion Kit Built award at Oshkosh. I can't help but think about the Reserve Grand Champion @jeremyjabaay and his equally beautiful project. Although on a different level of speed, both our airplanes were a labor of love and equally complex in our own ways. His castering nose wheel fairing blew my mind when I saw it. The judges recognized his ingenuity and craftsmanship and I have a great amount of respect for what he has accomplished. You are a Champion in my book Jeremy, congratulations. #eaa
