I had to complete an unexpected main landing gear I had to complete an unexpected main landing gear overhaul on race #77. While adding nitrogen the schrader valve failed and dumped all the nitrogen, and to my surprise the incorrect oil. It required I overhaul both main landing gear with seal kits from O'Day Designs. Up and running now better than ever.

Details from the top end assembly on Race 77. Fres Details from the top end assembly on Race 77. Freshly overhauled cylinders with new pistons and interestingly the new style wrist pins. (see comparison pics) Also freshly overhauled connecting rods with new bushings. Assembly was pretty straight forward until the right exhaust manifold. I may have been able to force it together but in the end I didn't want more stress on the manifold so I cut the cylinder 5 pipe free and welded in a spacer while it was installed on my assembly fixture.
Just before assembling the new connecting rods in Just before assembling the new connecting rods in race 77 I remembered a Continental service bulletin about checking the snap rings which hold the crankshaft counterweight pins in place. With the special tool Continental provided is a somewhat simple test. The tool must fit between the snap ring ears, if it doesn't fit that means the snap ring is not fully seated in the groove. Sure enough, I found 2 which failed the test. After removing the snap rings and cleaning out the groove I was able reinstall them both so they pass the test. Maybe they would have stayed, maybe not.. If not it would have been a bad day. Now to assemble the top end.
On to some more major maintenance on race #77. Whi On to some more major maintenance on race #77. While fixing all the exhaust parts it sort of turned into a deep dive. Did a compression check and cylinders 5 and 6 were leaking past the valves pretty bad so they had to come off. Once removed and seeing the condition of everything else, we decided to pull all 6, and it's a good thing we did. The #3 wrist pin had pushed against the cylinder wall and worn off the brass cap. See photos. The upper connecting rod bushing on that same cylinder was split. So, off come the connecting rods. Always remember, never rotate the crank without torque on the main bearings. Note the washer stack and nuts on all of the through studs. #lancairlegacy #lancair #superlegacy
Planning for future upgrades, I added O2 sensor bu Planning for future upgrades, I added O2 sensor bungs into the tailpipes on Race #77. These are an extended height bung I get from AEM. I am a believer in keeping as much of the sensor out of the lead as possible. We don't need fast responding sensors because we run such a relatively fixed power compared to a car, so any delay from not being engulfed in the exhaust gasses is no factor at all.
